My name is Poppy and I am a 15 year old student from Stratford-upon-Avon. I have been doing my bronze Duke of Edinburgh award and I decided to do my volunteering section of the award with the SMA Trust. Whilst I have been here I have learnt that the SMA Trust is the UK’s leading SMA research charity and that whilst it is trying to discover a cure it is helping to make the lives of those suffering with the devastating disease a little more comfortable and I am proud that I have been able to help the SMA Trust with the work they are doing.
I have mainly worked with the research based things as I am interested in a career in medicine so it is interesting to see where the funding for medical research come from. For example I have written up archives about research projects and created a glossary to give additional information for those who don’t know much about the body or SMA (and in creating it I learnt a lot of new words!), I also checked the budget for a major grant application. I have really enjoyed working with everyone at the SMA Trust and even when I have completed my DofE I will continue to support the charity any way I can.
